Register with the surgery

We get funding from the NHS to care for the people on our patient list. If someone moves away, changes their contact details, or doesn’t respond to us for a long time, we need to check if they still want to be registered.

What happens if we don’t hear from you

• You’ll get a letter asking you to contact us or update your details
• If you don’t reply, we’ll send you another letter giving you 14 days to respond
• If you still don’t contact us, we’ll remove you from our list

This is not a punishment. It helps us keep your information safe, makes sure we’re not claiming NHS money for people who no longer use our service, and helps us provide better care to active patients.

Not using us for 2+ years?
If we haven’t heard from you in more than 2 years and have no working contact details for you, we may also remove you from the list.

Important:

• If you are vulnerable, under safeguarding, or a looked-after child, a GP will review everything before any action is taken.
• If you are homeless or in temporary housing, please let us know — we will work with you.

If you’ve been removed but want to come back
If you were removed from our list and now wish to re-register, you can apply again if you live in our catchment area.

When someone is removed, it’s usually because we were unable to maintain safe contact. This might be due to out-of-date contact details or not responding to messages about important care or reviews.

We will look at each re-registration request on a case-by-case basis. To continue your care safely, we will ask you to confirm that you’ll keep your contact details up to date, respond to messages, and attend reviews when invited.

If you are visiting from another country and need to see a GP, here is what you need to know:

Who we can register
If you are staying in the local area for more than 24 hours but less than 3 months, we can register you as a temporary patient.

What this means
As a temporary patient, you can get care for urgent or immediately necessary health problems while you are here. This does not include general health checks, screening, or routine long-term condition reviews.

Prescriptions
We can only give prescriptions if it is safe to do so. This means we need clear medical records and recent test results from your own healthcare provider.

If you need other services
If you want a general health check, or a general review of a long-term condition, you will need to use a private GP service. We do not offer private services, but there are local private providers you can contact.

NHS number
If we register you, you may be given an NHS number if you do not already have one. This does not mean you can use the NHS as a permanent patient.

New Collegiate Medical Centre is committed to providing the highest quality care to our patients. As part of this commitment, we support the BMA’s advice on collective action.

After discussing this with neighbouring practices of what collective action would be more suitable, we have made the decision not to agree to prescribe specialist-initiated medication under a voluntary request of a shared care agreements for all hospital specialties. We believe that such medications should be prescribed by the hospital specialists who initiate them.

By taking this approach, we ensure that our patients receive these medications from the appropriate specialist who has in-depth knowledge of the treatment and can prescribe it in accordance with patient safety guidelines.

This practice does not initiate or issue repeat (ongoing) benzodiazepines or z-drug/hypnotics.

Patients will be provided with support to stop taking these medications. 

This follows national guidance to ensure the safe use of these medications.
