Home Visits

Home visits are undertaken by a GP and are after morning surgery at 12pm.

If you need a home visit for an annual review, our nursing team will be in contact to book this in.

The following guidelines and examples are approved by many local medical committees around the country.

GP visit recommended

GP home visiting makes clinical sense and is the best way of giving a medical opinion in cases involving:

  • The terminally ill
  • The truly bed bound patients. Those where travelling to practice by car would cause decline in their medical condition or discomfort.

GP visit is not usual

In most cases, to visit a patient at home would not be appropriate use of a GPs time. Common illnesses such as :

  • childhood fevers
  • colds
  • coughs
  • earache
  • headache
  • diarrhoea /vomiting
  • most cases of abdominal painscan all be seen in practice and do not need a home visit

These patients are usually well enough to travel by car. It is not usually harmful to take a child with a fever outside. These children may not be fit to travel by bus or walk, but car transport is available from friends, relatives or taxi firms.

It is not a doctor’s job to arrange such transport.

Adults with common problems

  • such as cough
  • sore throat
  • flu
  • back pain
  • abdominal painare all also able to travel by car to doctor’s premises

Common problems in the elderly such as:

  • poor mobility
  • joint pain
  • generally feeling unwellwould all also be best treated at the doctor’s surgery. The exception to this would be the truly bed bound patient

All visit requests will be assessed by a doctor and those requesting visits will usually be contacted by phone to discuss their request.
